I was thinking magical and authentic but watching others take rides down the canal, my thoughts turned to cheesy and Americanized. I don't know, maybe it was the time of year (August is quite busy and the city is filled siding San Marcos, TX with annoying tourists!) or the fact that they are so readily available, to everyone, at any time, that turned me off.
So, by this point, you are probably thinking whether I even liked Venice. I did indeed and would recommend the trip to anyone, especially if you are having a hard time deciphering which Italian city to visit. Below are my top 5 things to do while in Venice.
1. Spaghetti al Nero, which is the Italian spaghetti with ink cuttlefish, is by far one of the best meals I have ever had. Put Bacaro Osteria Barababao on your MUST list. My mouth is still salivating.
2. Spritz, a distinct and colorful beverage to quench your thirst on a sunny afternoon, is the traditional Venetian drink. Take a seat at Bancogiro for a waterside break. You'll need the rest after all of the walking you will do.
3. As I made my way back to the bus station at the completion of my trip, I made an effort to stop at Alaska Gelateria-Sorbetteria, complete with exotic flavors, such as artichoke, chili, asparagus, celery, fig, and ginger. Live on the wild side! It was definitely the oddest and most unique gelato I have ever eaten. I can guarantee you have never tasted anything like it. Perfect for a hot sunny and summery day.
