  1. Faro Old Town

If you're visiting Faro for the first time, you can experience many of the greatest Faro tourist sites by walking out of your hotel and along the cobblestone streets of Faro Old Town for a few hours. The old town is within the ancient city walls, much of which is still visible today. There are three sections of the city walls that are particularly interesting. The first is the Arco da Vila or Moorish Gate. The Arco da Porta Nova is the second, while the Casa do Arco do Repouso is the third. These are the mediaeval arches that led to the old town.

  1. Faro Cathedral

Faro Cathedral is another excellent item to do in Faro's old town. Faro Cathedral, like many other structures in Spain and Portugal, is built on top of a 13th-century mosque. In truth, the mosque was a very early building on the Moorish reconquista of Faro, which began in 1251, but it was more of a stronghold than the light and soaring structures that of as Cathedrals in other regions of Portugal and Europe. It has a few unique qualities, one of which is that it is the largest church in the Algarve region. Second, it offers great acoustics as well as aesthetic riches in its altars and azulejos (Portuguese glazed tiles).

  1. The Bone Chapel

The Capela dos Ossos, or Bone Chapel, is a small chapel built into the wall of one of Faro's most beautiful churches, the Igreja do Carmo. Over 1200 monks' bones (including heads) are in this 18th-century church. The monks' bones were interred in a friar's cemetery until 1816 when they were to the Bone Chapel. The Igreja do Carmo is a stunning example of Portuguese baroque architecture, complete with gilded woodwork, stained glass, and painted tiles. Another creepy and gorgeous old-town attraction to see if you're visiting Faro for the first time.

  1. Scuba Diving

The coolest things to do in Faro are not all on land! Faro is an excellent diving location. Hidroespaço Dive School and Dive Centre provides classes for novices as well as a variety of experiences for divers of all abilities. If you've never dived before, the centre has basic classes that will teach you everything you need to know. You can experience and explore shipwrecks and natural and artificial reefs after you feel comfortable being underwater, or if you already have your diver's licence. In the Rio Formosa, there is also an amazing underwater archaeological site and the world's largest community of seahorses.
